Harlequin Haven Great Dane Rescue

Wendy

Harlequin Haven Great Dane Rescue received a call on January 24th a frantic owner who said he had found his Great Dane in his back yard kicking and unable to stand. He had gotten her into his house and realized she needed medical care which he could not afford. He asked if we could help. We recognized her symptoms immediately as seizures. He was given directions to our vets office, All Creatures Animal Hospital in Amelia, and told to take her there immediately.

Upon arrival she had another seizure and was given medication to stop the seizures. She was signed over to the rescue so we could legally treat the her. Her heartbeat was erratic going from 51 to 106 and her body temperature was below 70 degrees and would not register on the thermometer. Wendy was started on warmed IV fluids and covered with heating pads and heated blankets. After 2 hours her body temperature was finally up to 78 degrees; another hour and it was up to 81 degrees. At this point it was decided to transport her to the rescue to receive 24 hour medical care. At the rescue she was placed on a heated mattress pad and covered with an electric blanket. She continued to receive IV fluids. At 9 PM she was started on IV antibiotics because at this point we could hear the congestion in her lungs telling us that she NOW was going into pneumonia. By 4 AM on January 25th her temperature was at 100 degrees by 8 AM her temperature was 103 degrees and climbing.

Wendy has a long road ahead. She had almost frozen to death and now has to overcome pneumonia. DANES ARE NOT OUTSIDE DOGS! They cannot withstand the extreme heat or the extreme cold!!

We at Harlequin Haven Great Dane Rescue want to thank the wonderful Veterinarians and Vet techs at All Creatures Animal Hospital for saving Wendy's life!

Wendy is doing much better and will now post her own updates:

My temperature is now back to normal and I am finally off the IV fluids. I am still on many antibiotics (1 get 2 shots in the butt each day and the rest are taken orally). I love my heated mattress pad and continue to sleep on it but no longer need to be covered with the electric blanket although I do like being covered! This is almost a culture shock for me since I am not used to this kind of treatment. Grandma at the rescue said I will need to go back to the vets office this week to have a check up but I just looked at her like she was crazy since I do not remember being at any vets office. I am still pretty weak and sleep 99% of the time. I want to thank all that sent their warm wishes and prayers for my quick recovery. Well I am going back to bed learning to use a computer is very tiring.
Update January 28: I continue to improve but am still very weak and tired and just want to sleep. Grandma says I am doing great though.

Update February 1: I continue to improve hopefully soon I will be able to be adopted!! Until then I will continue to enjoy my soft bed and playing with my toys!

Update February 23: Sorry I have not written an update but I am learning to love life! Needless to say I have made a full recovery from my near death experience. I have had tons of blood test in the past few weeks so they could monitor my progress. For the most part all is great but 1 test showed that I have a thyroid problem and I have been started on medication. I will be retested in a month or so to check the dosage then hopefully soon I will be ready for adoption. Well I would write more but I want to go play with my new toys (a good cuz and a bad cuz)!

Update March 3: As soon as I am regulated on my thyroid medicine I will be available for adoption!!

Update April 23: My dosage had to be changed on my thyroid medication. I will be retested in a few weeks hopefully I will then be ready for adoption!

Please can you spare a few dollars to help the Rescue continue to help me and other Danes like me it would be greatly  appreciated. Without the rescue I know what would have happened to me I would have ended up dead!!
Thanks, Wendy
